Civic insignia
The city’s Civic Insignia is displayed in the old debtors prison on the ground floor of the Guildhall and was officially opened in 1953.
Items include the Charles I Mayor’s Mace, Richard II Royal Sword, the ‘posy’ ring traditionally worn by the Mayor twice during his mayoral year of office, the Mayoral chains of office, Cap of Maintenance and much more. There are many interesting and varied items including pieces in silver and gold depicting Lincoln’s connection with local events and industry. The Town Crier’s Bell can be seen along with only four remaining pieces of the city’s original banqueting plate (the rest was sold after the Muncipal corporation Act of 1835). An electrotype cast of the old Mayor’s seal of 1300 (the original is in the British Museum) can been viewed along with the Common Seal of the City.
The city’s oldest charter dates back to 1157 delivering the city to the citizens, allowing them to collect their own rents and taxes and for them to continue to have Merchant Guilds. Many charters are on display including those presented by HM the Queen.
