Local History Cafe: Lincoln's dead centre

Lincoln’s dead centre? A history of the city’s Canwick Road/Washingborough Road cemeteries by Andrew Walker. Booking is essential.

Andrew Walker is an historian with longstanding interests in Lincoln’s past. Until 2020, he was Vice Principal at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance, and before that he worked for many years at the University of Lincoln as Head of the School of Humanities and Performing Arts.

Lincoln’s southern complex of cemeteries, strung along Washingborough Road, has a fascinating history. In this talk, the four different sites are explored – Canwick Road ‘old’ cemetery, Canwick Road ‘new’ cemetery, St Swithin’s cemetery and the crematorium. The talk plots the controversies concerning their development, the battles between burial boards, the relatively late arrival of the crematorium, and considers the architecture of these sites, including the decaying chapels which can be seen from Washingborough Road.
