Local History Cafe: People and Animals in Lincoln's West End

People and Animals in Lincoln's West End by Dr Shirley Brook. Booking is essential.

Dr Shirley Brook is a former tutor in History and Heritage Studies at Bishop Grosseteste University. She is Vice Chair of the History of Lincolnshire Committee and a member of the Historic Farm Buildings Group. She currently researches, writes and speaks about many aspects of our buildings' heritage.

Houses in Lincoln’s West End were much sought-after by upwardly mobile citizens in the late nineteenth century and yet the variety of animal houses to be observed among the tasteful new properties reveals a past closeness between people and animals which present-day residents would find surprising. The area now houses a diverse and vibrant community and very few animal houses are still used for their initial purpose. This talk will consider what the buildings of the West End can tell us about what life was like in the area at the dawn of the twentieth century.
