Hospitality at Hartsholme: Excavations in search of the medieval hospital of St Mary Magdalene of Hartsholme By Martin Huggon.

Martin Huggon is a Senior Lecturer of Archaeology and Heritage at Bishop Grosseteste University. Martin gained his PhD from the University of Sheffield, focused on the archaeology of medieval hospitals in England and Wales, his specialism is in medieval religious archaeology, especially hospitals and the military orders.

Since June 2023 the Archaeology programme at Bishop Grosseteste University has been carrying out a research and training excavation in the area of Swanpool/Hartsholme suspected to be the location of the medieval hospital of St Mary Magdalene. This talk will introduce the results of the first two years of excavation on the site, as well as explore how the work of the students at BGU and volunteers from the Lincoln Archaeology Group is shedding light on how these sites cared for the vulnerable in medieval society.
