Taking Stock: exploring agricultural shows on Lincoln’s commons, 1845 to 1955
Andrew Walker - Chair of the Society for Lincolnshire History & Archaeology, Editor of The Survey of Lincoln.
Andrew Walker is an historian with longstanding interests in Lincoln’s past. Until 2020, he was Vice Principal at Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance, and before that he worked at the University of Lincoln as Head of the School of Humanities and Performing Arts.
Both the Royal Show and the Lincolnshire Show were held several times in Lincoln, initially on The Cowpaddle and, later, on the city’s West Common. This illustrated talk will explore the content of these agricultural shows, how the city celebrated their visits, why they were so important and their intimate connection to Lincoln’s economy.
